Strategic Marine is a dynamic Western Australian-based shipbuilding company with an international outlook and an established reputation for producing quality, high performance commercial & governmental vessels for markets across the globe.
Since 2001, Strategic Marine has exported its shipbuilding experience and expertise by establishing three shipyards in Western Australia, Singapore and Vietnam which currently employ some 1,500 staff, of which over 200 of them were computer users.
The company has produced more than 460 quality craft, which include Oil & Gas Vessels, Maritime Security Vessels, Ports & Terminal Service Vessels, Passenger and Tourism Vessels as well recently entering the Offshore Wind Service Vessel market.
The company is expanding on its position as a leading global shipbuilder by consolidating and strengthening its position in the European wind farm vessel and workboat sectors of the market. This comes off the back of several successful recent new build contracts for the European market over the last two years. Protocol IT have been managing all IT services for Strategic Marine since 2007.
Strategic Marine approached Protocol IT to upgrade their network to allow seamless data and mail flow between countries.
To achieve this Protocol IT looked at all available options within the cloud environment, data centre storage and data replication between countries. The final design a mixed environment combining virtual servers and cloud email services. Technologies used were:

The user to access data at real-time speed. This means that drawing created in Australia is replicated into the Singapore and Vietnam servers in real time making the data behave as it would within a local LAN. The introduction of Office 365 opened a whole new set of features. These include:
Increased the mailbox capacity to 50GB per user. There was no need to manage or upgrade on premise servers.
Allow online email archiving for up to 100GB per user
Always on the latest versions of Microsoft Office, removing licencing issues
Cloud base SharePoint that was accessible in all countries
Secure email access on any device anywhere that is managed from a central portal, simplifying management of accidental or deliberate data deletion
Fast access to data folders regardless of which country the user resides
Business Grade email system without the cost of expensive on premise servers and related hardware
Always up to date with versions of the Microsoft Office suite
Extremely robust Disaster recovery system where full backups where available across countries, making it possible to fully recover a server from another country should there be a catastrophic failure there
The entire migration to approximately 12 months during which minimal or no downtime was experienced.
